Happy Charter Day of Lapu-Lapu City Cebu, Philippines June 17, 2013. Lapu-Lapu City celebrates its 52nd year. There will be no work and no classes in Lapu-lapu City on Charter Day.
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III declared June 17, 2013 a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City, in view of the City’s 52nd Charter Day anniversary.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Lapu-Lapu be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” read Proclamation No. 582.
This year’s celebration falls on a Monday.
Lapu-Lapu became a city by virtue of Republic Act 3134, also known as the City Charter of Lapu-Lapu, which was signed on June 17, 1961 by then President Carlos P. Garcia.
Before becoming a city, Lapu-Lapu was a municipality called Opon. The cityhood bill was sponsored by then Rep. Manuel Zosa (Cebu, sixth district).
The city became a lone district in 2010, with former city mayor Arturo Radaza as its first representative.
